In the Movies (and TV too)
Sidesaddle has been used regularly in
the movies for many reasons. Period movies often employ
sidesaddle riding and habits as a way to add authenticity to the social
status of the characters.
Auntie Mame employed it to comedic effect, the character didn't know how to ride, especially sidesaddle. Since sidesaddle is frequently regarded as more difficult, and awkward than Astride, the audience finds it more incredulous that she manages in the end.
And while some movies painstakingly research riding habits, saddles, and tack for their productions, many do not. This doesn't diminish the beauty of many of the costumes, but it does make them unsuitable for historical research.
I don't own the rights to any of the screen-caps shown here. I hope the movie studios will look gently on this site as they do on so many fan sites on the internet.
